John Rise is a successful artist in his own right, having been exhibited in prestigious shows across the country. He is a painter, a teacher and a much sought–after speaker at art schools and colleges. As the man behind the creation of the BEST line of easels, he knows what it takes to design and build the finest. Other major contributors include: Wilson Hurley, a fine painter whose work includes the stunning triptychs that grace Oklahoma’s Cowboy Hall of Fame. He helped develop the design for the first BEST Easel to accommodate large works, the Abiquiu. His input, including the addition of a heavy–duty marine winch to several BEST models, made the easels more rugged and functional. Ali Baudoin, a brilliant artist, sculptor and teacher is always thinking things through to completion. Ali not only made significant suggestions to better the easel line, but added the concept of interchangeable parts for different easel models to improve production efficiency and keep costs reasonable. His ideas show up in just about every BEST Easel on the market. Sitha Mam grew up in Cambodia and survived the savage Pol Pot regime. A mechanical wizard, Sitha developed a way of looking at design, mechanics, quality and practicality that defined our own conventional, Western thinking. “He brought with him an understanding of how to make things work,” John Rise says, “and a lack of concern for how much effort it might take to turn a great idea into reality.” To this day, Sitha serves as Production Manager of the BEST Easel line at Jack Richeson & Co., Inc. Cary Zimmermann, an award–winning designer, advertising man and graphic artist, contributed much to the aesthetics of the product design. His design for the Portable Collapsible easel became(with Sitha’ input) a highly successful BEST product. Each BEST Easel is made of American Oak, sanded to a smooth surface, then hand–rubbed with oil to reveal the inherent beauty of the wood grain.
